Proud Boys face new Jan 6 charges – follow live

GOP congressman calls second Trump impeachment ‘the conservative vote’

Senior members of the far-right Proud Boys group are facing a new indictment on multiple charges stemming from the 6 January attack on the US Capitol, including counts of seditious conspiracy against the US government.

According to the indictment, the five defendants – among them the group’s former leader, Enrique Tarrio – conspired “to oppose the lawful transfer of presidential power by force, by opposing the authority of the Government of the United States and by preventing, hindering, or delaying by force the execution of the laws governing the transfer of power”.

Meanwhile, Fox News has decided to not air the 6 January public hearings live and instead show only “as news warrants” during its prime time shows, the network has said in a press release. The live coverage of the hearings will instead be carried on its less-viewed sister channel Fox Business.

This makes Fox News the only major news network in the US to not carry the 6 January committee live when they start this Thursday.

Could Jan 6 committee show Ivanka and Jared interviews?

Among the most high-profile witnesses who have spoken to the 6 January committee behind closed doors are Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, both of whom are said to have appeared voluntarily and answered questions for several hours.

Reports are now saying that videotaped excerpts from their testimony could be aired during the panel’s televised hearings, a move that would surely infuriate the former president whatever Ms Trump and Mr Kushner had to say.

Read more on Mr Kushner’s testimony below from Johanna Chisholm.

Analysis: How GOP will “counterprogram” Jan 6 hearings

Having blocked the creation of an nonpartisan, independent 9/11 commission-style panel to investigate the 6 January attack, Republican leaders in the House of Representatives have consistently derided the select committee set up instead as a partisan sham. With the panel’s hearings about to be televised as primetime viewing, Eric Garcia describes how the party is working on ways to scramble the agenda:

House Republicans are planning their own counterprogramming. Elise Stefanik, who replaced Cheney as chair of the House Republican Conference, told Breitbart News that her team was working in close contact with the former president and that the conference “will be pushing back in a rapid response fashion”.

Stefanik also repeated a key talking-point of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy: That the US Capitol was ill-served on January 6 by inadequate security arrangements. (Of course, the House would not need adequate security or need to worry about a breach on January 6, had the former president not spent months whipping his supporters into a frenzy to the point of inciting a riot.)

Kinzinger rips Fox News for sidelining 6 Jan hearings

Adam Kinzinger, one of the two Republicans on the 6 January select committee, has made clear his contempt for Fox News after the network announced it will not be airing the panel’s hearings live, instead relegating them to the less-watched Fox Business.

Tucker Carlson, whose show clashes with the hearings but will air as usual, is boasting about his supposedly more accurate rendering of the events of the riot. He has repeatedly suggested the event was far less serious than claimed and/or that it was staged by federal agents as a pretext to round up conservative “patriots” in a gigantic Guantanamo-esque ideological incarceration programme.

Documentary maker to appear before 6 January committee

As several Proud Boys leaders face a new seditious conspiracy indictment, the 6 January committee is preparing to hear testimony from a filmmaker, Nick Quested, who was embedded with the group in advance of the insurrection and captured footage of a meeting the night before between Enrique Tarrio and the leader of the Oath Keepers, Stewart Rhodes. The video, shot in an underground parking garage, does not clearly record what the two men discussed, but their identities and the fact that they met are clear.

A viewer’s guide to 6 Jan attack’s first public hearing

Nearly a year since its inception, the House committee investigating the 6 January attack on the US Capitol will go public with its findings starting this week as lawmakers hope to show the American public how democracy came to the brink of disaster.

The series of hearings that will take place over the next several weeks begin with a prime-time session on Thursday night in which the nine-member panel plans to give an overview of its 11-month investigation.

More than 1,000 people have been interviewed by the panel, and only snippets of that testimony have been revealed to the public, mostly through court filings.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the hearing:

Trump-backed Senate candidate blames gun violence on Black people

ICYMI: Donald Trump last week made an endorsement in Arizona’s crucial senate primary, choosing Peter Thiel-backed candidate Blake Masters – and as with other Trump endorsements, now the attention is on, the chosen candidate’s past words are coming back to haunt him.

The Daily Beast reports that in an April interview on a right-wing podcast, Mr Masters opined that “It’s people in Chicago, St. Louis shooting each other. Very often, you know, Black people, frankly. And the Democrats don’t want to do anything about that.”

Liz Cheney describes “extremely well-organized” and “chilling” effort to subvert 2020 election

ICYMI: In an interview yesterday, Liz Cheney offered CBS News a flavour of the upcoming 6 January committee hearings – and her words indicate that the evidence to be unveiled is grievous indeed.

Asked if the events that led to the riot amounted to a conspiracy, she replied that she does. remarking that she was troubled by “how broad this multi-pronged effort was”.

She also accused house minority leader Kevin McCarthy of sticking by Donald Trump out of “craven political calculation” and accused him of “lying about what happened on 6 January”.

Watch a clip of her remarks below.
