Morgan has taken the wraps off its new Supersport model, which bosses say will ‘begin an exciting new chapter’ for the 115-year-old British brand.
But while it used a new CXV-aluminium platform, the Malvern-based car maker is sticking with its time-honoured tradition of hand-forming this over a wooden ash frame.
Each one will be coachbuilt at Morgan’s Pickersleigh Road headquarters in Worcestershire, which – combined with its wealth of upgrades – explains the eye-watering starting price of £102,000.
The lightweight two-seater still bears a typically Morganesque silhouette, although the Supersport will be available with the option of an interchangeable carbon-composite hard-top roof panel – adding just 19.7kg – or a traditional folding soft top to give it three distinctive looks, though at an extra cost.
Under the old-school centrally hinged bonnet is a BMW-borrowed turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine producing 335bhp and linked to the German company’s ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Combined with its new lightweight platform, Morgan claims the Supersport can hit 62mph in a smidge under 4 seconds and has a top speed of 166mph – though you might only want to try this on a closed road with the hard-top roof on.

Tipping the scales at just 1,170kg, it weighs in around the same as a Hyundai i10 city car – which is the smallest petrol-engined passenger vehicle on sale in Britain right now.
Due to its lightness, this is a sports car that won’t be a strain on your bank account from frequent petrol station visits.
Morgan claims the Supersport has an official combined fuel economy of 36.8mpg – not far off what you’d expect from a compact family SUV – and CO2 emissions of 175g/km.
And that’s not where the practicality ends.
For the first time in over a decade, the Supersport is a new model from Morgan to offer a small boot compartment. There’s increased stowage space behind the two seats in the cabin for smaller bags, too.

The Supersport should be a hoot behind the wheel and comes with a new steering system

‘Supersport marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Morgan – a flagship that reflects the spirit and confidence of our brand today,’ explained managing director Matthew Hole.
‘Supersport embodies an effortless combination of dynamic performance – thanks to its new lightweight ‘CXV’ aluminium platform – and contemporary yet unmistakable design.
‘Every element has been carefully considered to create an engaging and responsive driving experience, where technology is seamlessly integrated to enhance – rather than overpower – the connection between car and driver. ‘
And it should be a hoot behind the wheel.
It comes with a new – though still mechanical – steering system, which is claimed to improve both feedback and response through the twisty stuff.
Revised suspension should also deliver improved cruising comfort, as well as body control in the corners, with front and rear anti-roll bars as standard to deliver handling ‘beyond any previous Morgan sports car’.
Buyers can opt for a Dynamic Handling Pack at a premium – this comes with adjustable front and rear Nitron dampers and specially tuned valving and spring rates for those who like to tinker with the setup of their performance motors.
