Custom wood carvings, pocket and french doors, stained glass, curved glass windows, coffered ceilings and window seats. They don’t build them like this anymore.

This is a gated estate named Westwind, perched on a 170-foot ridge in Atlantic Highlands, with views of Sandy Hook Bay and New York City to the north and of the hilly woodlands of the Navesink peninsula to the south. It’s listed for sale for $5 million.

It consists of three homes and a barn on 11 acres. It’s believed the original land was purchased from Chief Pompamora of the Lenape Indians in the 1660s. The original house on the property, a Paul Revere-style home with many additions, is believed to have been built in 1776, according to listing agent Marlene Albrecht of Heritage House Sotheby’s International Realty.

“This stately property is more than just special – it’s magical,” Albrecht said. “From the moment you enter you have an overwhelming sense of appreciation for the history and charm.”

Construction on the largest home began in 1894 when Mr. and Mrs. E. Tillotson of Chicago bought the property. Mr. Tillotson died suddenly in Philadelphia in January 1895, seven years before the home was completed. His widow, Mary Tillotson, stayed on and expanded the property, according to the Middletown Township Historical Society.

The massive main house sits on a foundation of nearly 100,000 bricks. It’s three stories plus an attic and a basement. It has six bedrooms, three with fireplaces; four bathrooms; modern kitchen; formal dining room; semi-circular library with a fireplace; a pool and more.

The original home has four bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, dining room, ancillary room with a fireplace and enclosed wrap around porch and a two-car garage.

There is also a carriage house with four bedrooms and one-and-a-half bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, dining room and dual two-car garage. And an ivy-covered bank barn that was once home to the family’s horses.

“This private estate is perfect for the buyer looking for a year-round retreat at the Jersey Shore who wants to live inside a piece of history,” Albrecht said. “This location offers easy access to Manhattan and surrounding airports, beaches, parks and countless local amenities.”

Well maintained gardens with decorative specimen trees have allowed this estate to get an agricultural exemption, making the property taxes about $23,500. “They take care of and maintain all the really old trees on the property so they get a tax break for that,” said Albrecht.
